Introducing Tony Copsey
What is your background?
I come from a sporting background, having spent over 14 years as a top-class professional rugby player. Throughout my career, I played for Saracens, Llanelli Scarlets, the Barbarians, and represented Wales at the international level. Following my playing days, I've held various roles in rugby, including CEO at London Wasps, Managing Director at Harlequins, and CEO at both London Scottish and London Welsh. More recently, I’ve also led several performance coaching and business transformation projects with Fourth Dimension Expert Resource, while continuing my work in the sporting sector.
Why did you want to get involved in this challenge?
There are three main reasons. First, Doddie – we played in the same era and faced each other on numerous occasions, both at club level and internationally. He was always a fantastic person off the pitch, and we shared some great times together. Even after our playing days, we would meet up occasionally, and he was always full of energy, laughter, and warmth. Simply put, he was one of the nicest, funniest guys I’ve ever known.
Second, Paul ‘The Judge’ Rendall – another rugby legend who I shared some incredible memories with. His impact on our sport and community was immense, and I’m proud to have been a part of his journey.
Lastly, my brother Peter, whom we lost to cancer five years ago. Along with my other brother John, we always took on an adventurous challenge together every year. This challenge feels like the perfect tribute to him.
How long have you been cycling?
I’ve been cycling since the age of 50 when my wife bought me a road bike – along with a nose and ear trimmer, which I suspect was her way of making a subtle suggestion!
What do you think will be the most challenging aspect of the trip?
Apart from the physical endurance required for a 700-mile bike ride, I think the real challenge will be putting up with Paul Volley’s endless chatter and Paul Wallace’s ability to drink more than anyone I know. Fingers crossed there aren’t too many mountains in Scotland!
How important is it that we continue to raise funds for My Name'5 Doddie Foundation?
It’s absolutely crucial. The funds raised support vital research, awareness campaigns, and assistance for those affected by MND. Finding a cure is of the utmost importance, and every donation – no matter how small – will make a real difference.
What has been the most inspirational aspect of this challenge so far for you?
The overwhelming enthusiasm and effort that everyone involved with the My Name'5 Doddie Foundation has put into the fight against MND has been truly inspiring. The foundation’s work is incredible, and the organisation of this epic ride has been a massive undertaking. Rob Wainwright, my old mate who always leads by example, continues to remind us all of the importance of what we’re doing. And of course, the participants who have committed to this challenge – they all have an incredibly tough road ahead, but their dedication is inspiring.
