Introducing Support Team member - Laurence Smith

Laurence’s Story

I’m 51(ish), Caernarfon, North Wales - Support Crew

What is your background?

Lifetime rugby fanatic (20yrs amateurish and 10yrs junior coach). Career wise - worked in the public sector for the last 30yrs in a variety of settings across public health, children’s services, and regeneration.

Why did you want to get involved in this challenge?

Rob Boyns enthusiasm in selling the challenge and of course making a difference to the MND cause for the future.

How long have you been cycling?

Not sure I would call it cycling - I’m all about being in the support team for the proper cyclists…!

What do you think will be the most challenging aspect of the trip?

Making sure I make a real difference but also integrating well with the team/ trying to help with keeping everyone motivated and focussed. Also getting a couple of people in the team to learn some Welsh and the Welsh word for sheep!

How important is it that we keep Doddie's memory alive?

Critical - his legacy is a huge part of raising awareness and making a difference to raise funding to try and find a cure.

How important is it that we continue to raise funds for the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation?

All important - the charity has been able to have a real impact on the public conscience - the impact of MND is devastating and anything that can be done to try and improve ways to reduce its impact is essential.

What has been the most inspirational aspect of this challenge so far for you?

The immense commitment by all involved - it’s also a huge logistical challenge - the work involved by the team to plan and coordinate is highly impressive.

What, ultimately, do you want to come out of this?

That there’s a huge opportunity to raise awareness and that a decent amount of funding is secured to the cause.

And that everyone arrives safe and well!
