Introducing Huw Davies - Cyclist
What is your background?
I am a Chartered Surveyor and for the last 16 years have been Head of Asset Management for a US Investment Management Company, based in Old Bond Street, that manages a number of European Real Estate Funds.
Played rugby during the amateur period, playing for Cardiff, Cambridge University, Coventry, Wasps and England winning 21 caps (so far!!)
Why did you want to get involved in this challenge?
I have known Wee Roger Baird, an ambassador for the Foundation, since 1984, when we both played for the Public School Wanderers in the Hong Kong Sevens. We had a very enjoyable week reaching the semi-finals but were edged out by Fiji, who then went on to beat New Zealand convincingly in the final. We have always stayed in touch and have even cycled together in Cornwall. After that experience, it seemed like a good idea to go on a slightly longer ride!!
How long have you been cycling?
I have not officially retired from rugby but stopped playing in 1995 prior to my 3rd shoulder operation and started to cycle. Got bored of the drudgery of commuting so decided to cycle into Mayfair from Watford via the Grand Union canal. Have now been doing that, come rain and shine (not snow!), for the last 16 years.
What do you think will be the most challenging aspect of the trip?
I have a slightly dodgy left knee but think it will stand up to the strain, stress and altitudes of the ride but in fear and trepidation of 10 days spent with Paul Volley (only joking Volls)
How important is it that we keep Doddie's memory alive?
Doddie was such a big character and his name is associated with fundraising to find a cure for MND. Progress has been made but more money is needed, so his name, and cause has to be continually championed. As people will be aware the ride is in memory of Doddie as well as 3 other rugby players – Ed Slater, Rob Burrow and Paul Rendall. Paul, aka The Judge, passed away in June last year and had been a playing colleague and mate of mine for Wasps and England since 1983. He, like Doddie, was a much loved and entertaining man. We also shared the same birth date although the similarity ends there! Ultimately, we have to keep the memories alive of all those who have suffered from MND.
How important is it that we continue to raise funds for My Name'5 Doddie Foundation?
Money funds research, research finds a cure and we need a cure
What has been the most inspirational aspect of this challenge so far for you?
The enthusiasm, efficiency and relentless drive of those in the organisation of this mammoth effort to find a cure
What, ultimately, do you want to come out of this?
Progress
